Thank you - Impressions from the type-in

Eindrücke vom 2. Schreibmaschinenfest in Basel / Impressions from our all Swiss type-in in Basel on March 17, 2012. We came from Geneva, Zürich, Luzern, and even Berlin. What I found exceptional was the meeting of generations (second to seventh decade represented), as well as of analogue and digital, i.e. members of the Swiss collectors club shbs.ch and the Swiss branch of the typosphere. What a happy get-together! Please also read the write-ups of Florian @ maschinengeschrieben and Adwoa of retrotechgeneva. Thank you all for coming, it was my pleasure to host this event!

  1. Thanks for your reporting of the Schreibmaschinenfest in Basel, what a fun gathering! I really enjoyed your photos, Georg, always nice to see an intergenerational type-in group.

Looks like you've got a full-page broadsheet coverage there, and with the now famous Adwoa and her sartorial foray. Cheers to you Swiss typospherians!

That's an interesting calendar, makes me curious where you found it.

    1. Thank you! This calendar is really special, it indicates the gestational duration of farm animals and certainly helped farmers to plan their year, to help them anticipate the time of births.
I also think that the intergenerational aspect is great. One common passion, no age limits!
The newspaper coverage was excellent and came out just the day before the Schreibmaschinenfest.

    2. Ton, I've translated the newspaper article, it is scheduled for tomorrow's post (5.5 hours to go!).

  3. Great photos, Georg! I might steal a couple for my own write-up, which is still in the works and will be posted later this evening. Thanks for hosting us at your home; it was fun to meet all the new faces including the mystery turtle!!!

  4. Very wonderful! Great photos and it looked like plenty of good food and a perfect place to type. I really like that location. It looks like a serene place where one can sit and think; write; type; or all 3 -- or hold a type-in.

    Congratulations!

    1. We were lucky with the weather - St. Peter let it rain today, but protected the typosphere yesterday.

  5. Wonderful, thanks for sharing! I see my Lucien font -- nice to know that my Crandall is indirectly writing signs in Switzerland. :)

    1. Yes, from physical to virtual and back to physical. On the poster, it might be the Urania Piccola font, very similar to the Lucien one.
The speed-typing contest in both English and German created a very powerful, humming sound, which was heard all along the street - so the neighbours told me. Office noise must have been quite something back in the days!

  6. The turtle next to the "Express" is a great yet subtle joke.

    1. I am not sure who won the race. "Turtle beats Typewriter"?

Oh, great day, looks like. I can almost hear the clacking of typewriters and the clinking of beer glasses!
